Flaxseed Benefits For Sperm

Flaxseed, also known as Linum usitatissimum, has been found to have several benefits for sperm health. It contains lignin, which strengthens the immune system and protects sperm by enhancing its function1. The essential fatty acids present in flaxseed oil, such as Omega 3 & 6, help remove saturated fat and trans fat in the form of wastes through the liver, increasing blood flow to the reproductive organs and thereby increasing sperm production, quality, and count. Flaxseed oil also contains fibre, which regulates spleen function in the liver and insulin production, helping to reduce the risk of blood stagnation and normalize testosterone production, thereby increasing sperm count and quality. Lecithin or phospholipids in flaxseed inhibit bad cholesterol levels and protect cells from oxidation, reducing the risks of low libido, hormone imbalance, and nervous tension. Alpha linolenic acid in flaxseed oil is crucial for ensuring a healthy prostate gland, which enhances kidney function and regulates strong ejaculation and sperm production.

Research has shown that dietary inclusion of flaxseed oil improves semen quality in livestock animals. Flaxseed oil provides adequate alpha-linolenic acid, which improves sperm motility and concentration in fish, stimulates seminiferous tubules development and improves the number of Sertoli cells in sheep, and reduces age at puberty, improves sperm motility and concentration in goats. A study has found that dietary flaxseed oil and vitamin E improve semen quality via propionic acid metabolism. The study investigated the effects of dietary supplementation with flaxseed oil and/or vitamin E on semen quality in fertile Simmental bulls.

The results showed that the addition of flaxseed oil independently can increase sperm motion parameters, the levels of catalase, glutathione peroxidase, testosterone, and estradiol, while reduce oxidative stress in seminal plasma. Supplement of vitamin E independently can increase the motility, motility parameters, catalase and superoxide dismutase levels, and reduce oxidative stress in seminal plasma.

Flaxseed and its oil have several benefits for sperm health, including improving sperm quality, motility, and concentration, reducing oxidative stress, and enhancing kidney function and ejaculation. Incorporating flaxseed and its oil into the diet can be a beneficial measure for those seeking to improve their sperm health.
